When is a tree removal necessary? 4 Signs it is Time

James Roberts • February 18, 2025

Sometimes tree removal is necessary…

Trees are a beautiful part of any garden or exterior landscape. However, they can also quickly become a hazard if they become weak or infested or grow too close to buildings. If this happens to your tree, hiring an experienced, professional arborist to remove the tree is recommended.

Most people, however, do not recognise the symptoms of a sick or dangerous tree until it is too late. There are four simple examinations anyone can conduct which will indicate that it might be time to remove your tree.

(1) Evaluate the tree location
  • Where is your tree located?
  • Is it so close to buildings that the branches touch the walls or roof?
  • Is the tree’s shade blocking the sun over your house or backyard?

If the shade is falling over buildings or yard in the wrong area, it can prevent grass growing correctly or cause mould to grow in your house.

Finally, ensure you think about the unseen parts of the tree – the roots.

  • Are there any underground utilities and drains that could be affected?
  • Have the roots caused cracks in the foundations or footpaths?

If any of these aspects are a problem, it is time to consider removing the tree.

(2) Examine the branches

Check the individual branches of your tree. Are there any dead or hanging branches that could fall during a strong wind?

Owners should also be cautious of trees that have a distinctive lean towards an obvious target, such as a driveway or structure.

Tree height can also be a concern if there are any overhead power lines directly above the tree.

If the tree has one or two branches that are a problem, but the rest of it appears to be healthy, consider hiring an arborist to remove the dead wood and prune the tree into a safer, more aesthetically pleasing shape.

(3) Check the leaves, branches and bark

Sick and diseased trees need to be tended to by trained arborists skilled in tree removals. If your tree is losing leaves, growing peculiar bumps or fungus, it is likely diseased.

Not only do diseases make the tree appear visually unattractive, but it can also weaken the structural integrity of the tree causing it to become a hazard.

To determine how badly affected your tree is, seek out professional advice from a qualified arborist. They may be able to suggest some treatment to help strengthen your tree and bring it back to good health so that it may be retained in your garden.

(4) Look for defects

You should have any defects in your tree investigated by a trained professional, as certain defects may increase the risk that the tree will fail and fall. If a tree does fall on a person or property, this can prove very expensive for the householder as many insurance policies do not cover damage caused by trees falling, classifying them as acts of nature.
